Etymology 1

Possibly from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-gaw (“head”), with a noun-forming suffix *-n (Schuessler, 2003; STEDT), or from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *wal (“round, circular”) (STEDT). In the either case, compare perhaps Old Chinese 圓 (OC *ɢon), 元 (OC *ŋon).

A later theory by Hill (2019) compares Old Chinese 亘 (OC *[ɢ]ʷˤar (B-S), “to revolve around”) instead.
