Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *kroːl, *kʷroːl): semantic + phonetic (OC *kʰʷroːl).

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kroj (shellfish, shell). From the same root derives (OC *roːl, “aquatic snail”).

Schuessler (2007) sees possible relation to Proto-Austroasiatic *klɔʔ (snail, shellfish), yet that likely resembles Proto-Sino-Tibetan as well as Proto-Tai *ho:jᴬ (shellfish) (whence Thai หอย (hɔ̌i, shellfish)) and Proto-Mien *klu̯eiᴬ/ᴮ merely by chance.
