Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *kroːl, *kʷroːl): semantic 虫 + phonetic 咼 (OC *kʰʷroːl).
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kroj (“shellfish, shell”). From the same root derives 螺 (OC *roːl, “aquatic snail”).
Schuessler (2007) sees possible relation to Proto-Austroasiatic *klɔʔ (“snail, shellfish”), yet that likely resembles Proto-Sino-Tibetan as well as Proto-Tai *ho:jᴬ (“shellfish”) (whence Thai หอย (hɔ̌i, “shellfish”)) and Proto-Mien *klu̯eiᴬ/ᴮ merely by chance.
