Etymology
From ๆฑ.
Syllable
๐ โข (wu)
Usage notes
- In modern Japanese, old /ฮฒฬu/ evolved into /u/, and is written as ใ in hiragana and ใฆ in katakana. The sound /ฮฒฬu/ was reintroduced later and is written as ใใ in hiragana and ใฆใฅ in katakana - however most speakers pronounce this as a long /u/ sound, i.e. /uห/.
- ๐ is a retrospective invention. It was not actually used in the ancient Japanese literature (which uses man'yลgana instead) and thus is not included in the historical kana orthography.
- In Meiji era grammar books, ๐ was sometimes used to spell ใฏ่กไธไบๆฎตๆดป็จ verbs.
- In ancient times, all ใฏ่ก sounds were pronounced /pV/ (โVโ being any of the Japanese vowels). Then, during the Nara period, it shifted to /ษธV/ when it was in the middle or at the end of a word. Between the Heian and Kamakura periods, /ษธV/ changed to /ฮฒV/โ/ฮฒฬV/โ/V/. Some older grammar books used ๐ to show this in ใ่กๅๆฎตๆดป็จ verbs, ใ่กไธไบๆฎตๆดป็จ verbs, and ใ่กไธไบๆฎตๆดป็จ verbs (e.g. ๆใต (omofu) as ๆ๐ (omowu).
