From Old Norse Burgundaholmr, a name meaning something like "high or mountainous hill/island," ultimately from or related to Proto-Germanic *bergaz (mountain, hill) and *hulmaz (hill, island). Some believe the tribe name *bergundijô is derived from this place. More at Bornholm.[1]
