Etymology

Coined by German-born philosopher Karl Marx and by German philosopher, sociologist and economist Friedrich Engels in 1848 in the Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei (“Manifesto of the Communist Party”), from French communisme (coined in 1840), formed from commun (“common”), from Latin commūnis, and the suffix -isme (“-ism”).
