From Middle High German *mūltier, from Old High German *mūltior, from Proto-West Germanic *mūladeuʀ, from *mūl +‎ *deuʀ. Equivalent to obsolete Maul (“mule”) +‎ Tier (“animal”). Cognate with Dutch muildier.
