Proto-Germanic

Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰon-yeh₂, from *gʷʰen- (to strike, kill), although disputed by Kroonen due to the odd-in-Germanic sound change required from *gʷʰ > *b, who instead derives it from *bʰon-eye-, and adduces no further cognates in this latter theory.[1]
