From Proto-Indo-European *ḱlitóm (“that which is covered”), from the adjective *ḱlitós (“covered”), from the root *ḱley- (“to shelter, cover”). Compare, in particular, Sanskrit श्रित (śritá, “lying, situated in”).[1]
