Etymology

    From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bestei, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰh₂-é-ti. Cognate with Latvian best, Lithuanian bèsti, Old Prussian embaddusisi. Further related to Latin fodiō (to pierce, to dig), Hittite 𒁁𒁕𒀀𒄿 (to dig).
