From Middle High German abehouwen, from Old High German abahouwan. Equivalent to ab- +‎ hauen.

abhauen (weak or class 7 strong, third-person singular present haut ab, past tense haute ab or (rare) hieb ab, past participle abgehauen or (only in some regional vernaculars) abgehaut, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. (transitive) to cut off (with a cutting weapon) [auxiliary haben]

  2. (intransitive) to leave abruptly, to do a runner [auxiliary sein]
