From Old Galician-Portuguese albergue, perhaps from Old Occitan albergue, from Gothic *𐌷𐌰𐍂𐌹𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌲𐍉 (*haribairgō), from 𐌷𐌰𐍂𐌾𐌹𐍃 (harjis) ("army") and 𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌲𐌰𐌽 (bairgan) ("to lodge").
