Etymology

From Proto-Italic *auskoltā, from aus-, the original stem of auris (ear), + Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (to hear).[1] Other theories take the second component to be Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to incline) (which itself has been connected with *ḱlew-).
