Etymology
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 暴 (“violent; vicious”, SV: bạo). Cognate with Muong Bi pão.
According to Trần Trọng Dương (2014), the sense "storm" arose from the clipping usage of Chinese 暴風 / 暴风 (bàofēng, “violent wind; windstorm”) (SV: bạo phong) as early as the common Viet-Muong stage.
