     As you can see on the map for example, there isn't just the bavarian dialect, but also Swabian, Franconian and Hessian - and the bavarian dialect isn't limited to only Bavaria: it is also present in Austria and South Tyrol. This highlights the fact that state borders are not always language borders.

• The above distinction between bayrisch and bairisch is usually maintained in historic and linguistic scientific literature; otherwise only the ay-spelling is usual today.
• In the north of Bavaria, Upper Franconian dialects are spoken. In the south-west of Bavaria, Swabian dialects are spoken. On the other hand, most dialects in Austria and South Tyrol are Bavarian.
