Unknown. Most probably from Latin vetus (in which case it is related to bătrân (“old”)), via the extended sense of something old being in a 'poor condition'. Perhaps semantically influenced by Slavic *bědьnъ (“poor”), if not entirely derived from it. Compare Italian vieto (“old”).
