Unknown. Most probably from Latin vetus (in which case it is related to bătrân (old)), via the extended sense of something old being in a 'poor condition'. Perhaps semantically influenced by Slavic *bědьnъ (poor), if not entirely derived from it. Compare Italian vieto (old).
