Borrowed from Slovak buchta, (plural) buchty. Compare also Czech buchta (“bun”).[1][2] First attested in c. 1795.[1]

From a jocular association of bukta (“jam-filled bun”) (see etymology 1) and bukta (“his/her/its fall, downfall”) (see etymology 2).[3] First attested in 1994.
