- Partially inherited from Middle French des-, from Old French des-, from a conflation of Latin dis- (“apart”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dwís) and Late Latin dē ex = dē- (“from”) + ex- (“out”); Compare the neological borrowing dis-.
