Etymology

Either from the following:

  • From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əmpu (grandparent/grandchild (recipr.); ancestor; lord, master, owner); compare Malay punya (owner; to have).[1]
  • From Hokkien, possibly 引婆 (ín-pô),[2][3] or 姆婆 (ḿ-pô)[4] recorded in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642) as “ìn pō” and “m̄ pō”.[4]

Zorc (1985) records both etymologies but finds the Chinese etymology as less likely.[5]
