From Middle Low German lucht, luft (“air, smell”), from Old Saxon luft, from Proto-West Germanic *luftu, from Proto-Germanic *luftuz.
Cognate with German Luft (“air”) and Old Norse loft (“attic, air”) (whence Danish loft (“attic”)). Danish luft (“air”) is borrowed from the older form of the Low German word.
