Etymology 1
From Proto-Albanian *məi̯es with secondary nasalization, from the comparative of Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂s (“big”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌹𐍃 (mais, “more”), Oscan mais (“more”).[1] Related to madh (“big”).

From Proto-Albanian *ambi, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀμφί (amphí).[1] The simplification of /mb/ to /m/ is expected in Gheg but not in the standard language, hence the alternative form mbë.
