Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ntshji̯əŋ (“clear, fresh”), borrowed from Middle Chinese 清 (MC tshjeng, “clear, quiet”) with a nasal prefix. Cognate with Proto-Hmong-Mien *tshji̯əŋ (“new”), whence tshiab (“new”), as well as possibly Old Chinese 晴 (OC *zleŋ, “clear and fine weather”).[1]
