From the phrase lanx satura (literally “dish full”), from satur. Later influenced by Ancient Greek σάτυρος (sáturos, “satyr”), on the mistaken notion that it referred to the σατυρικὸν δράμα (saturikòn dráma, “satyr drama”), and existing in its alternative forms (cf. supra). Compare Latin satum.
