Usage notes

  • On the East Coast and Southwest of the United States, as well as in Wisconsin, Hawaii, and Alaska, 'soda pop' is abbreviated to 'soda', such as "May I have a soda?" Some, however, still use the term 'soda pop'.
  • In the Midwest, except for Wisconsin, in the Northwestern United States, soda pop is usually abbreviated to pop, such as "Do you have any pop?"
  • In the Midland United States, 'soda pop' is abbreviated to either 'soda' or 'pop' depending on the region.
  • In the Southern United States, 'soda pop' is sometimes abbreviated as 'pop', but is primarily referred to as 'coke' as a form of genericized trademark. Elsewhere, 'coke' specifically refers to the brand Coca-Cola.
  • In Canada, 'soda pop' is most often abbreviated as 'pop', but it is not rare to see it abbreviated to 'soda' either. Manitobans in particular frequently use 'soda' in addition to 'pop', while English-speaking Québécois primarily use 'soft drink' or sometimes 'soda', rarely using 'pop'.
