vegetarisch

Dutch

Etymology

Formed from the noun vegetariër (vegetarian) +‎ -isch

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˌveː.ɣəˈtaː.ris/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -aːris

Adjective

vegetarisch (not comparable)

  1. vegetarian (relating to the type of diet eaten by vegetarians)

Usage notes

  • While vegetariër is the standard noun to refer to someone who follows a vegetarian diet, vegetarisch is also not uncommonly used to refer to people. Thus, "ben je vegetarisch?" (are you vegetarian?) might be used to ask someone if they eat a vegetarian diet instead of the more standard "ben je vegetariër?" (are you a vegetarian?). However, since vegetarisch in standard Dutch refers only to food and not to the people who follow a vegetarian diet, this usage of vegetarisch to refer to people is often considered incorrect.
