Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἀπόστροφος (apóstrophos), substantivised feminine of the ancient adjective with sense: "turning away from, averted", from verb ἀποστρέφω (apostréphō).^[1] From ἀπό (apó) + στροφ- of verb στρέφω (stréphō) + ending -ος (-os).

For Greek texts:

• It takes the place of a vowel which is omitted in pronunciation. The space separating the two words is retained, e.g.

  από το "from the" pronounced /apo‿to/ > απ’ το pronounced /apto/

  μου είπε "he/she/it has said to me" pronounced /mu‿ˈipe/ > μου ’πε pronounced /ˈmupe/

• In practice, especially when typing, the simple typographic apostrophe ' (U+0027 APOSTROPHE, HTML ') is used instead of the ʼ (U+02BC MODIFIER LETTER APOSTROPHE, HTML ʼ) (a quotation mark U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK) used in typography, texts, books.
