From the active participle of حَمَى (ḥamā, “to protect”).

The sense ‘stallion-camel freed from work’ has been explained as coming from the image of a stallion-camel protecting its back: "a stallion-camel that has prohibited, or interdicted, his back [to be used for bearing a rider or any burden]".^[1]
