Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *süŕ- (“to strain, filter”);[1] cognate with Azerbaijani süzmək, Bashkir һөҙөү (höźöw), Chuvash сӗрме (sĕrme), Kazakh сүзу (süzu), Kyrgyz сүзүү (süzüü), Tatar сөзү (sözü), Uyghur سۈزمەك (süzmek) and Uzbek suzmoq.

سوزمك • (süzmek) (third-person singular aorist سوزر (süzer))

  1. (transitive) to strain, filter, percolate, to separate solid from liquid by using a filter
    Synonym: فیلتره ایتمك (filtre etmek)
  2. (transitive, by extension) to examine, inspect, scrutinize, survey, to observe carefully
    Synonym: تفتیش ایتمك (teftiş etmek)
  3. (transitive, by extension) to half close the eyes from drowsiness, intoxication or rapture
