Mazanderani
Noun
شو (šu)
North Levantine Arabic
Etymology
Contraction of أيْش هو (ʔayš hū, ʔēš hū, “what is it?”), from أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, “what”) + هو (hū, “it”).
The first component, أيْش (ʔayš, ʔēš, “what”), is in turn from Arabic أَيْشٍ (ʔayšin), an ancient colloquial contraction of أَيُّ شَيْءٍ (ʔayyu šayʔin, literally “what thing, which thing”) that gradually displaced original مَا (mā), مَاذَا (māḏā, “what”).
