Etymology

From Middle Persian pyl (/⁠pīl⁠/), from Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (/⁠pīru⁠/), related to Egyptian ꜣbw

(root of English elephant).

Cognate with Aramaic פִּילָא (pīlā) and Hebrew פיל (píl). Compare also Old Armenian փիղ (pʻił), Persian پیل (pil), Sanskrit पीलु (pīlu).
