Etymology

According to Nishanyan, from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (çapağul, raid), a derivation from Proto-Turkic *čap- (to beat, hit; attack; rob), the same root of چاپمق (çapmak, to raid, pillage), with the same suffix found in قره‌غول (karağol, patrol, sentry). See also چاپقی (çapkı, marauding raid) and چاپقین (çapkın, vagabond, scapegrace).
