चैन
Hindi
Etymology
Inherited from Old Hindi चैंन (caiṃna).[1] Cognate with Gujarati ચેન (cen), Marathi चैन (cain), Nepali चैन् (caina), Odia ଚଇନ (caina), and Sindhi چَيْنُ (cainu). Further origin is uncertain. Perhaps related to Prakrit चइअ (caïa, “possible”), चायंत (cāyaṃta, “enabling”), चाइय (cāiya, “made able”), related to Sanskrit चकति (cakati, “is satisfied”).[2] Or, from Sanskrit शयन (śáyana);[3] for the shift in initial consonant, compare Ashokan Prakrit 𑀘𑀖𑀢𑀺 (caghati, “is able”) < Sanskrit शक्ष्यति (śakṣyati).
