Inherited from Old Hindi जी (jī), from Prakrit 𑀚𑀻𑀅 (jīa), from Sanskrit जीव (jī́va, “long live”), the imperative of जीवति (jī́vati, “is alive”). Cognate with Braj जू (jū), Assamese জীউ (ziu).
