From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dáwṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáwš, from Proto-Indo-European *dóws (“arm”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬊𐬱 (daoš), Persian دوش (duš), Proto-Slavic *(paz)duxa (“bosom, armpit”), Proto-Celtic *dows(ants).
