Inherited from Sauraseni Apabhramsa पाणिअ (pāṇia), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀡𑀻𑀅 (pāṇīa), from Sanskrit पानीय (pānīya). Cognate with Old Punjabi ਪਾਣੀ (pāṇī), Old Gujarati पाणी (pāṇī), Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘜𑘲 (pāṇī), Middle Bengali পানী (pani).
