• From Angkorian Old Khmer ស្យាំ (syāṃ), from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ស្យាំ (syāṃ), ស្យំ (syaṃ) (first attested in c. 578-677 AD)

  (whence Middle Khmer សៀម (siama), Modern Khmer សៀម (siəm), ស្យាម (syaam), Mon သေမ်, သေံ)

• From Sanskrit श्याम (śyāma, “black, dark-coloured”).^[1] (whence the obsolete form ศยาม)
• Corrupted from Pali sāma as in sāmapadesa (“Siam”).^[1]

Officially used as the endonymic name of the country around 1855 during the reign of Mongkut^[2] until 24 June 1939, when the country was renamed ไทย (tai, “Thailand”).
