Characters in the same phonetic series (眔) (Zhengzhang, 2003)
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *ɡruːl, *ɡruːl): semantic 衣 (“clothes”) + phonetic 眔 (OC *l'uːb). Its original meaning is "to miss". The sadness linked to the act of missing is conveyed by the inside component 眔, an eye with tear under it; hence, the phonetic component also adds meaning to the character. The dress is a reference to the bosom and/or the heart and mind. The character was later modified into 懷.
