- a combination of colors among layers of clothing or different colors on the outer and inner surface of a garment
- Synonym: 襲 (kasane)
Usage notes
Appropriate color combinations of inner and outer clothing or layered kimono were first established for the Imperial court during the Heian period (794 to 1195). These include specific colors for men and for women to wear during particular seasons.
