Borrowed from Russian Росси́я (Rossíja), from Byzantine Greek Ῥωσία (Rhōsía), from Old East Slavic Русь (Rusĭ), possibly from Finnish Ruotsi (Sweden), from Old Norse Róðrsland (the land of rowing), older name of Roslagen, where the Finns and Swedes first met.
