Trotz

German

Etymology

From Middle High German traz, from an unknown source whence also Dutch tarten (to provoke, dare). Pokorny connects the words to Proto-Indo-European *der- (to tear) and compares them with Old English teart (tart), while Pfeifer suspects an onomatopoeic origin (DWDS). Others have compared Proto-Germanic *þrawaz (stubborn, obstinate). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
