Etymology 1

From Proto-Albanian *dera or *derna, from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥-néH-ti, from *der- (to tear, split). Compare Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, to skin), Sanskrit दृणाति (dṛṇāti, to burst, to tear) and Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (gatairan, to tear).[1] Alternatively, variant of bjerr.[2]

From Proto-Albanian *dersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ĝhersos, from *ǵʰers-. Compare Ancient Greek χέρσος (khérsos, dry land).[3] Alternatively from earlier *ndjerr, Proto-Albanian *ən-tersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ters- (to dry (up)). Compare Latin torreo (to dry), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌿𐍃 (þaursus), Old High German durri (arid, dry).
