Etymology
poikki- + -s (s-lative singular), through reduction of the earlier and dialectal form poies, poijes (< *poige-s). The variation in the gradation patterns between *-kk- : *-k- and *-k- : *-g- has not been conclusively explained, but the weaker form is found throughout Northern Finnic (e.g. Ingrian pois, Karelian pois); see Proto-Finnic *poikki for more.
