Etymology

From Early New High German reumen, a Central German umlaut variant of the regular form raumen, from Middle High German rūmen, from Old High German rūmen, from Proto-West Germanic *rūmijan, from Proto-Germanic *rūmijaną. By surface analysis, Raum +‎ -en. Raumen was in use in Upper German regions up until the 17th century and is still present in dialects, compare Bavarian rama.

    Im Winter räumt die Gemeinde nur die Hauptstraße.
    During winter, the municipality only clears the main road.
  2. to evacuate, to clear an area of people
    Aufgrund einer Bombendrohung musste das Gebäude geräumt werden.
    Due to a bomb threat, the building had to be evacuated.
  3. to vacate
    Der Minister musste nach dem Skandal seinen Posten räumen.
    The minister had to vacate his position after the scandal.
  4. to put, to move something to a place deemed more fitting
    Sie räumte die Teller in den Schrank.
    She put the plates into the cupboard.
    Wir sollten die Pflanzen in den Wintergarten räumen.
    We should move the plants to the winter garden.
