Etymology
From a Vulgar Latin root *sufflitum, from Latin sufflō, from flō (“to breathe”). Compare Aromanian suflit, derived from the same Vulgar Latin root.
Compare also the Latin word animus, anima ("soul, also breath") deriving from the Proto-Indo-European root for "to breathe", as well as Latin spiritus (“spirit”), from spirō (“breathe”).
