From Middle Low German tippen (to touch lightly), from Middle Low German tip (tip, fingertip), cognate with English tip, from Proto-Germanic *tuppijô, *tuppijǭ (tip), diminutive of *tuppaz (top).

Merged with Central and Low German tippen, dippen, düppen (“to dip, to dab, to tap”), from Proto-Germanic *dupjaną, cognate with tupfen and English dip. The sense “to type” is influenced by English type.
