יבמה

יְבָמָה • (y'vamá) f (plural indefinite יְבָמוֹת, singular construct יְבֶמֶת־, plural construct יִבְמוֹת־, masculine counterpart יָבָם)

1. (Jewish law) sister-in-law, brother's wife (who is usually a childless widow) or sometimes husband's brother's wife

     וְאִם־לֹא יַחְפֹּץ הָאִישׁ לָקַחַת אֶת־יְבִמְתּוֹ וְעָלְתָה יְבִמְתּוֹ הַשַּׁעְרָה אֶל־הַזְּקֵנִים וְאָמְרָה מֵאֵן יְבָמִי לְהָקִים לְאָחִיו שֵׁם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא אָבָה יַבְּמִי׃

     v'im-ló yakhpóts ha'ísh lakákhat 'et-y'vimtó v'al'tá y'vimtó hashá'ra 'el-haz'kením 'am'rá me'én y'vamí l'hakím l'akhív shém b'yisra'él ló 'avá yab'mí.
     wəʾim-lō yaḥpōṣ hāʾīš lāqáḥaṯ ʾeṯ-yəḇimtō wəʿāləṯā yəḇimtō haššáʿrā ʾel-hazzəqēnīm wəʾāmərā mēʾēn yəḇāmī ləhāqīm ləʾāḥīw šēm bəyiśrāʾēl lō ʾāḇā yabbəmī.

     And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say: ‘My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto me.’
