South Levantine Arabic
Etymology
From Arabic *اِسْتَأَنَّى (*istaʔannā), an alternative pan-dialectal form of تَأَنَّى (taʔannā) related to the pattern of استْلَقَّى (istlaʔʔa, “to catch, receive”), اسْتْنَاوَل (istnāwal, “to receive, take over”), and a dwindling set of other words. Has resisted being regularized to form V by removing the س (s) because the loss of the original hamza has made its relationship to form V opaque.
