ܟܠܬܐ
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
Alternative forms
- ܟܵܠܘܿ (kālō)
Etymology
Inherited from Aramaic כַּלְּתָא (kalləṯā); related to Hebrew כַּלָּה (kalá) and Arabic كَنَّة (kanna). For the alternative form without /t/ compare Turoyo ܟܰܠܘ (kalu, “bride, daughter in-law”).
Pronunciation
- (Standard) IPA(key): [kal.lθɑː]
- (Urmia) IPA(key): [t͡ʃal.tɑː]
- (Nineveh Plains) IPA(key): [kal.θɑː]
Noun
ܟܲܠܬ݂ܵܐ • (kalṯā) f sg (plural ܟ̈ܲܠܵܬ݂ܵܐ (kallāṯā), masculine ܚܸܬ݂ܢܵܐ (ḥiṯnā))
- bride (woman in the context of her own wedding)
- daughter-in-law (wife of one's child)
- brother’s wife
- Synonym: ܒܲܟ݂ܬ ܐܲܚܵܐ (baḵt aḥḥā)
Usage notes
- In Assyrian culture, a bride is understood in the context of the family she marries into. Therefore, she is considered the bride of her parents-in-law and siblings-in-law. She is not considered the groom’s bride, but would be considered his ܛܠܝܼܒܬܵܐ (ṭlībtā) or betrothed.
- Although most dialects use only the alternative form ܟܵܠܘܿ (kālō), some dialects that use both may reserve the alternative form for bride.
