Etymology

From Prakrit *दब्बइ (dabbaï), perhaps from Dravidian. Cognate with Gujarati દાબવું (dābvũ), Old Marathi 𑘟𑘰𑘤𑘜𑘹𑘽 (dābaṇeṃ), Bengali দাবা (daba), and Nepali दाब्नु (dābnu).
