Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit *वुणइ (vuṇaï)—compare वुणिय (vuṇiya, woven) and वुणण n (vuṇaṇa, weaving)—a variation of *विणइ (viṇaï)—compare विणण n (viṇaṇa) and Pali विनाति (vināti, weaves). Further from Proto-Indo-Aryan *uHináHti, from the root Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (to weave). Related to Sanskrit वे (ve) / (o), whence वयति (vayati, weaves), ओतुम् (otum, weaving), and उत (utá, woven). Cognate with Punjabi ਬੁਨਣਾ (bunṇā), Bengali বুনা (buna), Gujarati વણવું (vaṇvũ), and Marathi विणणे (viṇṇe). Related to पिरोना (pironā, to thread, needle).
