Inherited from Prakrit *𑀭𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*rŏkk, to stop), probably from Sanskrit रुध् (rudh, to stop) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), whence also Prakrit 𑀭𑁄𑀟𑁂𑀇 (roḍei, to stop). Cognate with Punjabi ਰੋਕਣਾ (rokṇā) / روکنا (roknā), Sindhi روڪَڻُ / रोकणु (rokaṇu), Nepali रोक्नु (roknu), Bengali রোকা (rōka), Gujarati રોકવું (rokvũ), and Marathi रोखणे (rokhṇe).
